Brescia becomes the first European city to experiment with an autonomous car-sharing service. An electric Fiat 500 can come to the customer on its own, take them to their destination, then head off to the next ride or to recharge, all without a driver.
The project, developed by the company A2a and the Polytechnic University of Milan, will be tested until November 2025, according to Adnkronos.
The car can travel at speeds of up to 30 km/h and will be constantly monitored by a supervisor on board and a control camera.
"This is an important step for the future of urban mobility," says Renato Mazzoncini, the director of A2a. According to him, the system will help reduce traffic and pollution in cities.
For safety, the experiment is authorized by the Ministry of Transport, and a safety car will accompany the autonomous vehicle to warn other traffic participants.
In addition, researchers are also developing a wireless charging system so that the car can recharge its battery without human intervention.
