The Saint Mary long weekend, the busiest weekend on the Romanian coast this summer, turned into a tragedy in Jupiter. Three people – a 35-year-old man and two children – were caught by the strong waves and dangerous currents of the Black Sea.
Lifeguards and volunteers formed a human chain to bring the three to shore, as reported by Observatornews.
The Mangalia boat, SMURD, and SAJ crews were involved in the operation. The two minors were rescued, but the man was brought to shore in cardiac arrest.
"The County Ambulance Service team started resuscitation maneuvers on-site, but despite their efforts, the victim passed away," announced ISU Constanta.
In Neptun, two tourists were rescued at the last moment from the waves. This time, they were conscious and refused to be taken to the hospital.
Red flag ignored by tourists
Since Friday, almost all beaches along the coast have raised the red flag, a clear sign that swimming is prohibited. Nevertheless, thousands of tourists entered the water. Many claim they are unaware of the flags' significance.
Meaning of the flags on the coast
To prevent such tragedies, tourists must know the meaning of the flags raised by lifeguards:
- Red with yellow - beach is monitored by lifeguards
- Red - swimming is strictly prohibited
- Yellow - swimming allowed only for experienced swimmers
- Black and white checkered - area exclusively for boats
- No flag or white flag - swimming is allowed
The National Association of Professional Divers and Lifeguards recommends using the SEA STATUS app, which provides real-time information about raised flags, safety alerts, and swimming advice.
