Doctors from the Emergency Clinical Hospital „Prof. Dr. Agrippa Ionescu” announce on Wednesday that Ion Iliescu’s health condition has worsened, with significant respiratory difficulties.
„Due to the progression of the underlying disease, the patient’s general condition has deteriorated, with significant respiratory difficulties. The multidisciplinary medical team established this morning the need for performing a surgical procedure to ensure the patency of the upper airways,” announced representatives of the hospital where Ion Iliescu is hospitalized.
The new operation proceeded without incidents, and Iliescu remains obviously hospitalized in the intensive care unit.
Former President Ion Iliescu is suffering from lung cancer.
"Following the specialized evaluations, imaging, and histopathological examinations conducted up to this moment, the multidisciplinary medical commission unequivocally established that the lung condition the patient is suffering from is of oncological nature," confirmed the SRI hospital on Monday.
Ion Iliescu was hospitalized on June 9th at the "Agrippa Ionescu" Hospital, with respiratory problems.
Until then, Ion Iliescu had regular check-ups at Elias Hospital.
In April 2019, Ion Iliescu was operated on by doctors from the "C.C. Iliescu" Institute, with his diagnosis being liquid pericarditis - cardiac tamponade.
In recent years, Ion Iliescu has not made public appearances, but he has been conveying messages on his blog. His last such message was on May 19, where he congratulated Nicuşor Dan on his election as president.
Ion Iliescu was the President of Romania between 1990 and 1996, as well as between 2000 and 2004.
