Air traffic at Brașov airport and the airfields around Brașov, Romania, was suspended on Sunday evening due to a technical issue that occurred at the virtual control tower.
ROMATSA confirmed to BoardingPass that it suspended air operations in the Brașov airport area at 7:22 p.m.
Air traffic controllers at the ROMATSA center in Arad, from where flights to and from Brașov Airport are directed, were left without video feed from the control tower at the airport.
UPDATE The technical issue that caused air traffic controllers at the ROMATSA center in Arad to not receive video feed from the video cameras at the control tower at Brașov airport was resolved at 10:30 p.m.
"Starting tomorrow, August 19, flights at Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport will operate as planned. The technical issue that occurred on the evening of August 18 has been resolved.
Thank you for your understanding!", as stated on the Brașov Airport's Facebook page.
The traffic suspension affected two flights, which were rescheduled for Monday, August 19. These are two Fly Lili flights, one from Brașov to Thessaloniki and one from Thessaloniki to Brașov.
Brașov airport is the only one in Romania whose air navigation services are provided remotely.
Brașov Airport was inaugurated on June 15, 2023. At that time, officials explained that it is the first in Eastern Europe to be remotely managed in terms of air traffic control from Arad, through a virtual tower.
Specifically, they said, the latest technology in the field is used, which is found in the vast majority of airports in developed countries, as it provides more accuracy and allows for detailed observation both in the airspace around the virtual tower and in the airport vicinity.
