Mircea Lucescu is negotiating with a top European national team

The renowned Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, currently 78 years old, is negotiating his return to top-level football, with a national team.

The former coach of Dinamo Kiev, Rapid, Inter, or Shakhtar, has not been working since November 2023, after parting ways with the Kyiv team. During this time, he has received several offers, including from Fenerbahce or Besiktas, all of which he chose to turn down.

Lucescu has now been approached by Andriy Shevchenko, the President of the Ukrainian Football Federation, who has offered him the position of national team coach, as reported by the Ukrainian press through the portal sport.ua.

The Romanian is tempted to take over the national team in yellow and blue, but he will only do so under certain conditions. The current coach of Romania's former EURO 2024 opponent is Serghei Rebrov. Despite earning 4 points, Ukraine was eliminated from the EURO after defeating Slovakia, drawing with Belgium, and losing to Romania, 0-3.

The former Dinamo player has coached twice in the country north of Romania, at Shakhtar between 2004 and 2016 and at Dinamo Kiev between 2020 - 2023.
