Nicușor Dan: The fact that we, as a state, have come to cancel elections was a failure of certain institutions

Nicuşor Dan, who announced his candidacy for the presidential elections on Monday, believes that the decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the annulment of the elections represents a failure of several institutions and that Toni Greblă should no longer lead the Permanent Electoral Authority.

„The most important thing at this moment, in my opinion, is for people to be convinced, as many of them as possible, that the measure to cancel the elections was a correct one. And if we need to wait three more months for that, I believe it is good to wait. Because the institution of elections is probably the most important institution of democracy, and people need to be convinced that the decision to cancel the elections by the Constitutional Court was a correct one.

Some incomplete information has started to emerge, up to this point, of course it was good for them to come out before the elections, so we wouldn’t get to that point, but it is very, very important for the issue of the annulment of the elections to be settled.

I am very pleased with the announcement made by the European Commission today, by the Commission President herself, that the Commission is also investigating TikTok’s interference in the elections in Romania. So, this is the most important thing,” said Nicuşor Dan on Tuesday evening on Digi24.

He believes that the decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the annulment of the elections represents a failure of several institutions.

„First of all, it was a failure, the fact that we, as a state, have come to cancel elections, it was a failure of some institutions: the Permanent Electoral Authority, secret services, it is certain that it was a failure. (…) At some point, we will have to see who and how much was wrong, but I believe it is more important now for the issue of the annulment of the elections to be clarified. (…)

If it is confirmed, and I tend to believe it will be confirmed, that there was an influence from a foreign state, most likely Russia, this issue belongs to external security services and you cannot simply take some reports that obviously have a level of secrecy, you cannot take them and put them on the table overnight. The way this issue is made public must be done professionally, if, I repeat, if this is confirmed,” added the General Mayor of Bucharest.

Asked if, in his opinion, pro-Western parties will designate a single candidate for the presidential elections, Dan replied: „I am convinced that the parties that are professional institutions in terms of politics, less professional in terms of governance, otherwise we wouldn’t be here, will conduct their own analyses, their own polls, there will be discussions, and we will have a decision in the end, we will have it as a society.”

„Without a doubt, those who have made mistakes must pay, both in services and in civilian institutions. For example, I do not think it is acceptable for Mr. Greblă to continue to lead the Permanent Electoral Authority at this moment,” said Nicuşor Dan.
