Why Trump will not support Georgescu, nor Lasconi

The hybrid attack of Russia on Romania was a desperate action, launched by a power in crisis to create a breach in NATO and the European Union. Following the cancellation of the elections, supporters of Călin Georgescu, as well as the leader of USR, tried to gain support from Washington.
Why Trump will not support Georgescu, nor Lasconi

Elena Lasconi, who made it to the final of the presidential elections annulled by the Constitutional Court, wrote a letter to Donald Trump on December 7.

In it, she specifies that she is not „Soros’ candidate,” expressing disappointment that the election scheduled for Sunday, December 8, did not take place following the decision of the Constitutional Court.

„I am disappointed by the Constitutional Court’s decision to annul the presidential elections. Romania is now more fragile than ever, and the country is threatened both from within and from outside. The Constitutional Court did not remove the threat from Russia, and the institutions in Romania have a long list of questions to answer,” wrote Elena Lasconi in the message sent to Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

Elena Lasconi's decision has caused astonishment within the party, as well as disapproval from many of her supporters, who view the message as an invitation to the American president-elect to address Romania's internal issues.

Moreover, the camp supporting Călin Georgescu, the pro-Russian candidate in the presidential elections, made considerable efforts to obtain validation from Donald Trump.

His statements that NATO is a weak military alliance, that he will "take care of the shield at Deveselu," and that Romanians should draw inspiration from the "Russian wisdom" have sparked fear and suspicion among a large part of the public opinion.

Validation from Donald Trump would mean a lifeline for Călin Georgescu, as well as for the pro-Russian movement in Romania, the ultimate argument that the US supports rapprochement with Moscow, with all the political consequences that ensue.

Kennedy Did Not Make It to Romania

"I will resign if the Trump administration investigates me and confirms the accusations against me," stated Călin Georgescu in a televised show, sending a desperate message to the team of the American president-elect.

Additionally, the groups behind the pro-Russian candidate made intense lobbying efforts in the last week to bring a person close to Trump to Romania, someone who would validate Georgescu in front of public opinion.

At the end of November, there was intense circulation on social media that Robert Kennedy Jr. would come to Romania, along with Tucker Carlson, a former Fox News show host who has repositioned himself as a propagandist for the dictatorial regime in Russia.

The latter was supposed to conduct a discussion between Kennedy and Călin Georgescu.

Nonexistent Support

The meeting did not take place, with even a reaction from the Romanian ambassador to the US.

"Regarding the speculations in the press about alleged American support for the presidential candidate Călin Georgescu, I can tell you that, at the level of American authorities, American politicians from both parties (Republican and Democrat), or political and civic personalities with democratic orientations who have a significant voice in the American public space - such support does not exist," stated Andrei Muraru, the Romanian ambassador to the US.

After the setback with Kennedy, Georgescu's supporters turned to Brad Parscale, former campaign manager for Donald Trump in 2016, now just a promoter of his politics. He visited Romania five years ago, but this time he did not come.

The pro-Russian groups behind Georgescu obtained a message of support from Donald Trump Jr., the president-elect's son, but he has no role in the future administration, and after the post on X-Twitter, he did not further comment on the subject.

Both sides had flawed political strategies, each trying to capitalize on the strength of the American leader who won the elections and will return to the White House.

Russia Losing Influence

Donald Trump returns to leading the US in a completely different context from four years ago when he left the Oval Office amid scandal.

Meanwhile, Russia has invaded Ukraine, and Putin also bet that Donald Trump would be as easily manipulated in his second term.

However, Trump's agenda is a complicated one. In terms of domestic affairs, he must address the issue of illegal immigration, the main promise of his electoral campaign. Additionally, he still faces uncertain legal situations, with at least four ongoing lawsuits.

His political program promises a revolution with radical changes in key institutions, such as the Pentagon, FBI, and the Government.

Regarding foreign policy, he promised to quickly find a solution to the conflict in Ukraine and to impose tariffs on export products.

Day by day, it becomes clear that Trump cannot fight on so many fronts without his administration entering into crisis without a coherent plan and without taking into account reality.

And the most visible and tangible international crisis is Russia's collapse.

Threat to America

The withdrawal from Syria, where Kremlin forces collapsed and fled in the face of the assault by Assad's opposition, indicates that Russia's external influence has evaporated, with the conflict in Ukraine absorbing all of Moscow's military and financial resources.

In this new context, the message conveyed by Donald Trump in Paris was quite clear - his administration will not come to Russia's aid and will seek to take advantage of the conditional support of Ukraine.

There is intense collaboration, both in terms of the war industry and politics, between Russia, China, and Iran. Such an alliance poses a direct and substantial threat to America's strategic supremacy and Western allies. This was the first thing that Donald Trump's transition team learned when they contacted Joe Biden's team.

Any assistance Trump might offer to Russia would be a shot in the foot for America, and an elected president cannot jeopardize the strategic objectives of the world's most powerful democracy with his decisions.

Therefore, there are few chances that any member of the American administration will support Georgescu and his pro-Russian associates, or that the partnership between Romania and the US will be affected in the near future.
