The weather takes a sudden step back towards winter: after milder days, meteorologists announce a pronounced cooling throughout the country, starting from the middle of the week.
We are talking about temperatures well below the period’s normal, rain in many regions, and even snow in the mountains – a scene more reminiscent of March rather than the end of April.
Pronounced cooling throughout the country
The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued a weather warning valid from Wednesday, 9:00 a.m., until Saturday, 10:00 a.m. During this period, temperatures will drop in all regions, and Thursday and Friday will be "especially cold for this time of year."
The temperatures will drop by 8 to 12 degrees below the multi-year averages, meaning maximum temperatures close to those typical of early spring. Additionally, during the night, especially in the northern half, frost will occur, a rare phenomenon for the end of April.
Rain in the south and east, snow in the mountains
Atmospheric instability will bring periods of rain, especially in the south and east of the country. Rainfall amounts may reach 10–15 mm, and locally even over 20 mm.
In the mountains, as well as temporarily in hilly areas in Moldova and eastern Transylvania, precipitation will be mixed – rain, sleet, and snow. At altitudes above 1,400 meters, snowfall will become predominant, and a snow cover is expected to accumulate, estimated at 5–8 centimeters.
Strong winds in most regions
In addition to cold and precipitation, the wind will enhance the sensation of cold weather. Gusts will generally reach 40–45 km/h in most parts of the country, and in the mountains, they may exceed 60–70 km/h, especially in high areas.
Bucharest: from 14 to only 8 degrees
Even in the capital, the weather changes rapidly. Wednesday, temperatures will drop compared to the previous day, with highs of 13–14 degrees and a mostly cloudy sky with occasional showers.
Thursday will be the coldest day: the maximum will not exceed 8 degrees, and the wind will have some intensifications. Friday, the weather remains cold, with highs of 12–14 degrees and showers, especially in the latter part of the day.
