Trump wants highways without accent: executive order requiring truck drivers to speak English

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that requires truck drivers to demonstrate proficiency in speaking the English language, calling it a „non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers.”

"My administration will enforce the law to protect the safety of American truckers, drivers, passengers, and others, including by adhering to safety enforcement regulations that ensure anyone behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle is properly qualified and proficient in our national language, English," the order cited by CNN states.

Last month, Trump signed a separate executive action officially designating English as the national language of the United States. The March order marked the first time in America's history that an official language was designated at the national level.

The order revokes a mandate signed by President Bill Clinton, which required agencies to provide assistance to speakers of languages other than English, although those agencies still have the right to provide services in other languages.

These orders come amid the president's aggressive crackdown on illegal immigration and efforts to reform the country's immigration system.
