Trump and Putin will meet in Budapest. The US President says "significant progress" has been made, the Kremlin reveals what they discussed about the Tomahawk

Donald Trump had a phone conversation with the Kremlin leader on Thursday. The US President then announced that they had agreed to meet in Budapest and mentioned that it was a „good and productive” call in which „important progress” was made.

Trump provided details on his Truth Social account after the phone call with Vladimir Putin, starting by mentioning that Putin congratulated him for the „great achievement of peace in the Middle East, a centuries-old dream.”

Trump is satisfied

The call was "good and productive," stated the White House leader, specifying that next week there will be a meeting at the level of "high-level advisers" from both countries, as reported by BBC.

"President Putin and I will then meet at an agreed location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can end this shameful war between Russia and Ukraine," continued Trump.

He did not mention whether he discussed with Putin the Tomahawk missiles he intends to supply to Ukraine for strikes on Russia.

Trump also wrote that he will discuss his conversation with Putin when he meets tomorrow with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. "I believe there has been significant progress in today's phone conversation," he mentioned at the end of the post.

Putin warned Trump about Tomahawk

The Kremlin stated that Vladimir Putin warned Donald Trump during the phone call that providing Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles would affect the relations between the US and Russia and the peace process, as reported by Sky News.

The Russian President also told Trump that Moscow's forces currently have "full strategic initiative" along the entire front line in Ukraine, stated Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov to reporters.

Ushakov mentioned that a new planned summit between the two presidents will be preceded by a phone call between American Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to take place in the following days.

He also said that the phone call, which lasted just under two and a half hours, took place at Russia's initiative.

Orban is ready for the Budapest summit

On the other hand, Putin's special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, claims that the call between the Russian President and Donald Trump was "positive and productive," posting on X an image of Donald Trump's post on Truth Social.

Hungary's Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, welcomed on X the decision of the two leaders to meet in Budapest.

"The planned meeting between the American and Russian presidents is excellent news for the peace-loving peoples of the world. We are ready!", he wrote.

What Trump posted while talking to Putin

The American President announced on Thursday that he was discussing over the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine.

"I am currently speaking with President Putin. The conversation is ongoing, a long one, and I will report its content, as will President Putin, at its conclusion. Thank you for your attention to this matter!", wrote Trump on Truth Social.

Axios previously reported that Trump intended to speak with Putin during the day on Thursday.

First discussion between Trump and Putin in the last two months

This is the first discussion between Trump and Putin in the last two months, after their last contact on August 18, when several European leaders visited the White House after the Alaska Summit.

A few days ago, Trump thanked Putin in a post after the Kremlin leader praised his peace efforts in a public speech. However, the American President expressed disappointment again that Putin refuses to end the war in Ukraine and did not rule out issuing a new ultimatum to the Kremlin leader.

The conversation between Trump and Putin takes place a day before the President receives Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.

The two will discuss the possibility of providing long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, which could reach Moscow and could prompt Russia to negotiate peace.
