The Tax Authority summons Iohannis: Wants the keys to the house in Sibiu lost in court and the million euros earned from rent

The National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) confirms that it has notified the family of former president Klaus Iohannis to release the half of the property they owned on Nicolae Bălcescu Street in Sibiu. At the same time, the Iohannis family must also pay 4.7 million lei (almost one million euros), an amount representing rents collected between 1999-2015.

The money was calculated by an independent evaluator, adjusted for inflation and legal interest, without including the expenses incurred by the Iohannis family for maintaining the space.

The notification, sent in mid-August, concerns the commercial space on the ground floor of the building, used until 2015. "Through this letter, we inform you about the recovery of sums representing the compensation for the lack of use of the property located in Sibiu (...) as well as the voluntary payment of the amounts for the period 1999-2015," ANAF transmitted, cited by Profit.ro.

The institution also specified that the exact amount of the obligations is protected by tax secrecy. The notification does not have the character of a tax claim, so the Iohannis family cannot be forcibly executed. In the absence of payment, the dispute will be settled in court, where the amount could be reduced.

ANAF has changed its stance

Initially, ANAF announced that it intended to wait for the clarification of the process related to the other half of the property, registered in the name of Rodica Baștea. There is an ongoing process opened by the County Administration of Sibiu Finances, contesting the inheritance certificate obtained in 2012. The first hearing took place in February 2025, and the finalization is expected only after the definitive solution at the Court of Appeal.

Spouses Klaus and Carmen Iohannis definitively lost their property rights over their half of the property in November 2015, with the court ruling that the space belongs to the state as there were no legal heirs of the initial owners. Subsequently, the Pitești Court of Appeal also rejected the annulment appeal.

The space has not been used since 2015, but between 1999-2015, the Iohannis family obtained substantial income from rents. In total, the tax authorities evaluated the compensation for rents and lack of use at 4.7 million lei.

We remind that the family of the former president definitively lost in court, in September 2024, two properties in Sibiu to the benefit of the Romanian state, including the money obtained from their rental.
