Former mayor and current candidate, detained after attempting to bribe two police officers

A former mayor of the Pogana commune in Vaslui (Romania), currently a candidate for a new term as mayor, was detained by police after allegedly attempting to bribe two police officers, judicial sources stated.

On Sunday, around 11:40 a.m., police officers conducted an inspection at a company located in the Pogana commune, Vaslui County, managed by the detained man’s wife.

In order to avoid legal action regarding the identified irregularities, he promised to give the police officers a sum of money.

„Two police officers from the Economic Crime Investigation Service – Vaslui County Police Inspectorate rejected the bribe offered by a businessman during an inspection and filed a complaint regarding the offense of bribery.

As a result of this situation, on Sunday, May 19, 2024, officers from the Anti-Corruption General Directorate - Vaslui County Anti-Corruption Service, under the coordination of the prosecutor in charge from the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Vaslui Tribunal, organized and caught a man red-handed while offering the sum of 3,000 lei to the two police officers," stated the police.

The man caught red-handed is now being investigated for bribery and has been detained for 24 hours.
