Deadly explosion in a building in Craiova

A powerful explosion occurred on Wednesday evening in a residential building in Craiova (Romania), causing a part of the first floor to collapse.

Approximately 50 people were evacuated and cannot return home until an assessment of the building is carried out.

A 52-year-old woman, who lived above the apartment where the explosion occurred, died under the weight of a collapsed wall.

Another injured woman is hospitalized in the ICU for plastic surgery, with burns covering 25% of her body surface, as reported by the representatives of the Emergency County Hospital Craiova on Thursday.

Another woman received emergency medical care, was examined, and does not require hospitalization.

"She will receive psychological support. The social worker will handle the case," according to the representatives of the healthcare unit.

The explosion was so violent that the apartment doors flew off their hinges.

The affected building was built in 1960, without connection to the gas network. Therefore, the ground floor apartment owner was using two gas cylinders for heating.

Firefighters say this improvisation may have caused a gas accumulation.

None of the tenants had insurance for their apartments, so they will have to rebuild their homes with their own money. However, with assistance from the Craiova City Hall, which announced a grant of 10,000 lei for those whose apartments were completely destroyed and 3,000 lei for those with minor damages.
