The Island of Lake Morii was reopened on Friday after extensive modernization works. Bucharest residents can find here pathways close to the water, relaxation areas, a green beach, pontoons for water sports, and places where they can observe birds or the sunset.
„This is Paradise on Earth! Here in Bucharest, with a dream landscape and the most beautiful sunset,” stated the Capital City Hall, which has published several images of the new arrangement.
The island, also known as the "Island of Angels," covers an area of 3.4 hectares. Of this, 2.3 hectares are occupied by green spaces. Over 400 trees and shrubs have been planted, as well as thousands of plants chosen to adapt to the local ecosystem.
Less Concrete, More Nature
The project was designed as a park as close to nature as possible, with minimal interventions and no asphalt. Visitors have access to perimeter pathways, routes that descend close to the water level, sitting areas, and urban furniture placed overlooking the lake.
"We wanted it to be natural, friendly, and peaceful," explained the interim mayor of Sector 6, Paul Moldovan.
The arrangement includes a beach on green space, two playgrounds for children, an artesian fountain, informative panels, as well as telescopes and binoculars for bird watching. Two surveillance and lifeguard points have been provided, and the existing gazebo is set to be rebuilt and modernized.
In the center of the island, there is a wide clearing designed for concerts, outdoor exhibitions, and small-scale cultural, educational, or community events.
Kayaking, Paddleboarding, and Windsurfing on Lake Morii
The water becomes an important part of the experience offered to visitors. The pier has been modernized for docking small boats, and the five pontoons will be used for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and other water activities.
Initially, people will be able to bring their own equipment while adhering to safety regulations. Local authorities say they have also started discussions with specialized organizations that could later manage these activities.
"You have access to water, more shade, vegetation will grow, you can relax on the beach, hold small public events. I hope you like it and preserve it," said Mayor Ciprian Ciucu.
The mayor spoke about "a beautiful feeling of fulfillment after years of preparation and work."
The First Step of a Larger Project
The reopening of the island represents the first stage of the extensive urban regeneration project for the Lake Morii area. The next step is the development of a linear park approximately two kilometers long, which will extend the promenade and have the island as its final point.
The island's development works began in February 2025. The Capital City Hall indicates a total investment of 58.9 million lei, funded by European funds. According to data presented by Sector 6 City Hall, the actual cost of the works was approximately 32 million lei excluding VAT, of which around 20 million came from European funds.
This weekend, the "West Side Sunset Fest" takes place on the Island of Lake Morii, featuring concerts, sports activities, children's activities, and a food court area. The festival runs on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 22:00.
