Taxpayer-Funded Gold Business Cards for MPs

The offer for a set of business cards for Romanian MPs is at least three times more expensive than those on the market, because they are made with gold leaf, says USR deputy Radu Mihaiu. The cost is covered from the protocol fund.

Radu Mihaiu wanted to order a set of business cards, but was surprised to find out that they are much more expensive than he expected. The reason? They are made with gold leaf, he was told.

"Today I was a bit shocked.

Having quite a few meetings as the president of the information technology committee with various industry actors, I received a bunch of business cards. I don't usually have physical business cards, I present the QR code from my phone and everything is saved much faster, electronically, without unnecessary papers and business cards that end up in a drawer.

However, seeing that even big players in the IT industry have physical business cards, I said to myself 'let me make a set for myself, just in case'.

And I asked the committee for a quote for a set of 100 business cards. Today I received the offer: 310 lei, covered by protocol.

Three hundred ten. Lei," the deputy wrote on Facebook.

Radu Mihaiu writes that he quickly checked the free market and saw that prices range between 50 and 100 lei, depending on quality.

"Obviously, jokes started in the parliamentary office: 'with gold leaf so that the gentlemen parliamentarians don't get an allergy'," he writes.

Mihaiu asked Parliament why they cost so much, and "the answer was absolutely shocking": business cards are indeed made with gold leaf.

"That's why the set costs 310 lei, because they are made with gold leaf. Sometimes, reality beats the joke. I think I'll stick to electronic business cards," the deputy concluded.
