Strong earthquake in Spain: Roof of an airport collapsed

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 shook a large part of southern Spain on Monday morning, just a few hours after the country was devastated by floods.

The earthquake hit on Monday around 7:00 a.m., affecting southern Spain, including popular tourist destinations such as Costa del Sol and Alicante, as reported by The Independent.

The quake rattled hundreds of towns. According to the Spanish daily El País, Granada, Malaga, and Jaen, along with Murcia, Alicante, and Albacete in the east, were among the most affected areas.

In Almeria, the roof of an airport collapsed. "We heard some noises one after the other, then there was a strong boom and a large cloud of dust," said an airport employee to the local press. "It was a big scare for us (...) fortunately, no one was injured," said an airport employee to the local press.

In Huercal de Almeria, the ceiling of a Toyota showroom collapsed.

The earthquake occurred just a day after violent storms affected much of northeastern Spain.
