Danish secret service: Russia could attack a neighboring country within six months

Russia could be ready for a large-scale war in Europe within five years of the end of the war in Ukraine, estimated Denmark’s foreign intelligence service.

In a report published on Tuesday, the Danish Defence Intelligence Service (DDIS) warned that this assumption is based on the hypothesis that the United States would not participate alongside NATO countries in such a war, based on the current analysis of threats, dpa reported.

DDIS estimated that, in its opinion, it is unlikely for Russia to be able to continue the war in Ukraine at the same time as a war against one or more NATO countries.

However, in the event that the conflict in Ukraine ends or is frozen, Russia could have significant military resources and could possibly attack a neighboring country within six months, the report stated.

The agency does not see any concrete Russian plan for a war against a NATO country. However, there would be a higher risk of Russia attacking if it were to consider that the North Atlantic Alliance is weakened, for example, if the US withdraws support for NATO.

Countries in northern Europe have been concerned for some time about a possible threat from Russia. The intelligence services of several Nordic states consider a Russian attack to be the greatest threat to their security.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius warned last year that Russia could be able to launch a military attack on NATO territory by 2029 and called for the German army to be prepared for war as quickly as possible.
