Former great German tennis player Boris Becker has intervened in Simona Halep’s case.
Becker finds it unnatural that Simona was not accepted at Roland Garros, considering she served a longer sentence than the one decided by TAS.
"She was penalized twice. First, because she couldn't play, and then because, in the end, she was acquitted of all charges (note - reduction of the sentence by TAS, from four years to nine months).
Simona is no longer 21 years old. So, the longer it takes to make a decision, the more opportunities have passed her by. As long as she is in good physical condition, clay is her preferred surface, she would have had a chance at Roland Garros," Becker said for IAmSport.ro.
At the same time, Becker stated that WTA should amend the regulations and introduce a new provision to help Simona.
"I believe that WTA should establish a law called 'Halep Law,' because she cannot be treated like this. The same at Wimbledon, now the Olympics are coming, which are also played on clay, she is a superstar in Romania and beyond. You take away the opportunities of these athletes, which is unfair.
I think tennis authorities need to realize this and offer her a fair chance to come back," Becker added.
