National Road 1 was blocked on Wednesday afternoon on the beltway of Sinaia, near the train station, after several trees were knocked down by a storm and fell on the road.

The railway traffic on the 300 Bucharest – Brasov Mainline was also halted in the area of Sinaia train station due to fallen trees, and intervention teams are working to clear the road and railway track.

The Sinaia City Hall posted on Facebook that wind gusts exceeded 100 km/h.

Several areas in the mountain resort were affected by the storm. The roof of the royal train station in Sinaia was torn off by gusts and thrown over DN1, towards the polyclinic, according to a witness who filmed the damages caused by the extreme weather.

"The end of the world in Sinaia. Everything is torn, everything is destroyed. Look where the roof flew, into the tree!" the man says in the online video.

Several roofs were completely ripped off buildings and guesthouses in the center of the resort, some of them projected onto parked cars.

Storm Victims

Several people were taken to the Sinaia City Hospital after being caught by the storm while on Peles Alley. The victims have fractures, abrasions, and have suffered blows especially to the head, as the wind knocked down trees and branches, said Mariana Miu, the manager of the Sinaia City Hospital, to News.ro.

The injured range in age from 17 to 68, according to preliminary data obtained by doctors, with five of them being Israeli tourists.

"So far, 14 people have been assisted by SMURD and the Prahova County Ambulance Service. Of these, 10 victims were in the Peles parking area, while 4 were in the Sinaia Monastery area," ISU Prahova reported.

Another incident occurred during the storm at a gas station on the outskirts of Sinaia towards Busteni, where a tree knocked down by the wind fell on a car with a person inside. Firefighters acted quickly to remove the tree, and no one was injured, according to information provided by ISU Prahova.

During the storm, authorities were alerted through a 112 call that six people were caught by the storm, being hit or blocked by fallen trees. Emergency crews intervened on-site, finding that four of them suffered minor injuries and panic attacks. All victims were conscious and cooperative, medically evaluated by a SMURD team, without requiring hospital transport.

Tourists Stranded on the Mountain

The road leading up to Cota 1400 is impassable, and the cable transport facilities are no longer operational.

Mountain rescuers state that there are tourists caught by the storm at the top of the mountain, waiting for the cable transport facilities to be restored in order to descend to the resort.

Firefighters also intervened to clear several side roads blocked by fallen trees, especially in the Furnica neighborhood and Cumpatu area.

Interventions were hindered by narrow roads and difficult access, but authorities estimate that traffic will be completely restored by this evening, if no new weather alerts arise.

The northern area of Prahova County, including the resorts in the Prahova Valley, was under severe weather warning.

The population was warned through RO-ALERT messages, advising to avoid travel and seek shelter in safe places.
