The upcoming week will be decisive for Ukraine, highlighted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday evening, reiterating her call for a „just and sustainable peace.”
The head of the European executive indicated that she had discussions with the partners in the „Will Coalition,” which gathers supporters of Kiev, as reported by AFP.
"Despite the pressures, we remain absolutely firm in our objective: to achieve a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine," she insisted, on the social network X.
"Sustainable means that no peace agreement should contain the seeds of a future conflict or destabilize the overall European security architecture. We also discussed the need for robust and credible security guarantees.
I informed leaders about our efforts to secure funding for Ukraine for the period 2026-2027. Our proposals are on the table, and the sense of urgency is shared by all," added the President of the European Commission.
Trump, extremely frustrated
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Thursday that the United States continues to demand significant concessions from his country in negotiations to end the war with Russia, including the withdrawal of troops from Donbas.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump said he is "extremely frustrated" with Kiev and Moscow and now wants "actions" to end the war, as reported by the White House spokesperson.
From the European Union, the heads of state and government of the 27 member states will meet in Brussels on December 18 to discuss their plan for financing Ukraine, potentially using Russian assets frozen in Europe.
So far, Europeans have faced opposition from Belgium, where most of these Russian Central Bank assets are located.
Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever refuses to allow his country to be the only one to pay the price in case of problems.
In the absence of very solid guarantees from the other EU countries, "I will do everything I can to block this decision," he stated in Brussels at the beginning of December.
