The group of liberals supporting designated Prime Minister Adrian Veștea has opened a new legal front against the leadership of the PNL. The 16 challengers of the decisions of the National Political Bureau have filed an urgent suspension request at the Ilfov Tribunal to challenge the resolutions convening the National Council and the extraordinary party Congress.
According to the documents filed in court, the signatories argue that the current leadership of the PNL has violated statutory provisions to quickly organize party meetings and to amend the Statute in order to remove members with different opinions.
Among the plaintiffs are Adrian Veștea, Alina Gorghiu, Sorin Cîmpeanu, Monica Anisie, Andrei Baciu, Nicoleta Pauliuc, and Ionuț Stroe.
Request for the suspension of the extraordinary Congress
The Liberals challenge Decisions No. 26 and 27 of the National Political Bureau on June 17, 2026, convening the National Council on June 19 and the extraordinary Congress scheduled for June 21.
According to them, the National Political Bureau did not have the authority to convene an extraordinary Congress, as this prerogative belongs exclusively to the National Council, as stipulated in the party's Statute.
The plaintiffs also claim that an "Extraordinary National Council" consisting of approximately 800 delegates was created, a body that does not exist in the PNL statute and does not correspond to the structure of the National Council regulated by the party's documents.
Moreover, they contest the inclusion of the Statute amendment on the agenda and argue that the procedure was organized in violation of the minimum statutory deadlines for preparing the congress.
Accusations of violating a court decision
Veștea's supporters also invoke the decision pronounced on Thursday by the Ilfov Tribunal, which suspended two resolutions adopted by the National Political Bureau on June 15.
These resolutions concerned instructing PNL MPs not to vote for the Veștea Government and providing sanctions for those who do not adhere to the party's position.
In the new action, the plaintiffs argue that the current leadership continued the contested actions despite the existence of an enforceable court decision and accuse an attempt to eliminate members with different opinions from the leadership.
Request for moral damages of 4 million lei
Separately, the 16 liberals have filed a lawsuit against the PNL and the party's president, Ilie Bolojan.
They request the engagement of tort liability and the payment of moral damages of 250,000 lei for each plaintiff, with the total amount requested reaching 4 million lei.
According to the information available on the court's portal, the case regarding the challenge of the convening of the National Council and the extraordinary Congress is set to be heard on July 3.
The leadership of the PNL announced that they will challenge the Ilfov Tribunal's decision to suspend the previous resolutions of the National Political Bureau.
