The extreme decrease in the water level of the Danube River has revealed in Serbia a series of wrecks from the German navy from World War II.
Near the river port of Prahovo, groups of curious individuals managed to climb over the remains of the former Nazi fleet, as reported by the Serbian media, cited by the dpa agency.
The wrecks have been occasionally visible during the dry summers of recent years, but the severe drop in the Danube's waters has now exposed them more clearly.
The concentration of wrecks in this section of the Danube, just before the Iron Gates, the Danube Gorge at the border between Serbia and Romania, is the result of events at the end of World War II, when the German navy deliberately sank a part of its fleet from the Black Sea there.
This flotilla was being pursued in retreat by the Soviet military fleet on the Danube. In order to prevent the Soviet ships from advancing, the Nazis sank around 200 ships into the Danube.
These wrecks near Prahovo currently represent a significant and dangerous obstacle for navigation on the Danube when water levels are low.
The European Union is funding a gradual removal program for these wrecks, but the operation is hindered by their difficult positioning.
