President Nicușor Dan has promulgated the law establishing the year 2026 as the Year of the United States of America in Romania, initiated by several AUR parliamentarians.
According to the promulgated law, the year 2026 is established as the Year of the United States of America in Romania.
The law stipulates on this occasion that events can be organized to strengthen the Romanian-American strategic relationship and reaffirm "Romania's commitment to the values of the free world, freedom of expression, and authentic democracy."
In order to achieve the proposed objectives, central and local public administration authorities may organize or support, materially or logistically, within the limits of approved budget allocations, the organization and conduct of:
a) conferences and public debates;
b) cultural, academic, and educational events dedicated to American history and values;
c) public affairs and communication actions in Romanian-American diplomacy; d) any other activities to promote Romanian-American cooperation and democratic values.
In addition, public radio and television can broadcast thematic materials produced on the occasion of the Year of the United States of America in Romania.
The AUR bill was decisively voted in the Chamber of Deputies on June 30 (the last day before the parliamentary recess), with 283 votes in favor, 8 against, and 4 abstentions.
