Authorities in the Republic of Moldova warn that on Tuesday evening the energy system will face a shortage of electricity and recommend citizens to prepare for possible power outages, having alternative lighting sources at hand.
„This evening, during the consumption interval of 9:00 PM-11:00 PM, the electric power system of the Republic of Moldova will face an estimated electricity shortage. For 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM, a commercial deficit of approximately 74 MWh is forecasted, and for 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM – 56 MWh,” the Government in Chișinău announced.
According to authorities, the entire region is facing the effects of a heatwave after the Danube's flow decreased, leading to a reduction in the capacity of several power plants. Electricity consumption has increased significantly, while production is also affected by weather conditions.
Authorities point out that the Republic of Moldova is part of the regional energy market and depends on imports, so when there is a shortage in the region, it affects the quantities of energy we can procure.
"Until the energy markets close, the authorities and system operators have taken all possible steps to procure the necessary energy. Thus, Moldelectrica will use emergency energy mechanisms to maintain the stable operation of the electric power system. Authorities are making every effort to ensure the necessary energy for the Republic of Moldova and will also use emergency energy mechanisms to maintain system stability," the Government stated.
Authorities emphasize that voluntary reduction of consumption by each citizen can make a difference.
How citizens can contribute (between 9:00 PM-11:00 PM):
- turn off lights and electrical appliances that are not in use;
- delay the use of washing machines, dryers, electric ovens, and other high-consumption appliances;
- limit the use of air conditioning to essential needs;
- if possible, avoid using elevators.
In addition, citizens are encouraged to take minimal preparations for possible temporary power outages, including ensuring alternative lighting sources, charging mobile devices, and avoiding the use of electrical equipment in such risky conditions.
Essential services will continue to operate normally. Medical institutions, emergency services, critical infrastructure, and other services essential to the population benefit from the necessary measures to ensure the continuity of activities.
