At least four people have been killed and 23 others injured, including a child and a pregnant woman, following a Russian airstrike on Kiev.
The Dormition Cathedral, located in the Pechersk Lavra complex, one of Ukraine’s most important religious and cultural sites, caught fire, writes Kiev Independent.
Pechersk Lavra, a complex of monasteries and caves housing some of Ukraine’s most revered altars and relics, was directly targeted.
„The roof of one of the holiest places in the Christian world – the Dormition Cathedral of the Pechersk Lavra in Kiev – is on fire,” wrote Metropolitan Epiphanius, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, on X on the night of the attack.
Additionally, a high-rise residential building caught fire after being hit by drone shrapnel, said Timur Tkachenko, the head of the capital’s military administration.
Local authorities have urged people to take shelter, according to Reuters.
The airstrike damaged power lines and left 140,000 residents of Kiev without electricity, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram Monday morning.
Drones continue to attack Kiev from different directions, the Ukrainian Air Forces said on Telegram, and explosions can be heard in the city, a Reuters witness reported.
The latest attacks come after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he spoke with US President Donald Trump on Sunday and discussed efforts to end the war that has lasted for over four years, ahead of this week’s G7 summit in France.
Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday that ending the conflict in Ukraine is crucial and that he is ready to help, the Kremlin said.
