The crowd that came to witness a „historic moment” at Howard University, where Democratic candidate Kamala Harris spent election day, was filled with doubt and left with heads down after the latest presidential election results were announced.

Gathering on the lawn of Harris’s university, known as „Black Harvard,” her supporters enthusiastically expressed their hopes of seeing a woman of color at the helm of the USA, reports AFP.

They didn't even imagine their defeat and eagerly awaited the Democratic vice president to address them. In the end, the speech was canceled, leading to the departure of those who still held hope.

"There are still votes to be counted," explained one of Harris's advisors, announcing that she will not make any statements until Wednesday.

Everyone waited with their eyes fixed on the giant screens, and Harris's supporters forgot to wave their flags as the initial results from the battleground states favored the Republican candidate.

"I'm anxious, I'm leaving, I can't stand on my feet anymore," declared Charlyn Anderson, who left Howard University's lawn before midnight.

"I'm thinking about the road ahead if Donald Trump wins. How to uphold democracy now?" she rhetorically asked.

"We won't give up until it's over, but I'm scared," she added.

In front of a gigantic screen where the Republican red was becoming more predominant, Ken Brown, a former Howard student, is in shock. "He's a very weak candidate, it doesn't make sense," he said.

"I don't know who's voting for him. I don't understand," he added.

Kwame Anderson says he came to Howard to see change.

"I pray that this nation won't be more divided than it already is, we need peace. We don't want violence anymore, we don't want hatred," she said.
